Bahía de Banderas (Bay of Flags) is the second largest bay in North America and because of its water temperature and secluded location it is one of the preferred destinations by Humpback whales who migrate here during the winter season to give birth, thus making it an ideal location where to go whale watching. The season lasts from December to the end of March and during this time of the year the ocean gets cooler yet air temperature remains warm during the day.
Near the northern tip of the bay lay the Marietas Islands, a natural reserve for birds with a just few beaches that are difficult to reach and plenty of underwater life. Accessible only by boat visiting the islands is a great way to get away from it all and enjoy nature. Paddle surfing along or around the islands makes this a special that will generate beautiful memories.
What Does This Tour Include?
*Note: This tour only takes place between December and March, which is when the whales are here.*
The ocean tends to be calmer in the mornings, with breezes picking up at noon and the surf growing throughout the day, hence the tour takes place during this time of the day. Depending on your location we’ll pick you up at around 8:30 am and will drive to El Anclote. The boat will leave El Anclote beach at around 9:30 am with the paddle boards time at which you’ll head into the ocean and look for the whales. Once spotted you will have plenty of time (around 1 hour )to enjoy the show and take all the pictures you want.
From here you will then make your way to the islands where you’ll jump into the ocean and will live an adventure paddle surfing around or along the islands while enjoying the view. You’ll see the northern tip of the bay a few miles away and Puerto Vallarta in the horizon, unless there’s mist, and might even spot some whales in the distance! After about 2 hours of paddling you’ll hop on the boat and make your way back to El Anclote. From here we will then take you to your hotel which should take around 45 minutes, arriving at around 2:15 pm just in time for lunch.
What Should You Bring?
You’ll be spending most of the day in the open, so we recommend you bring the following:
- Sunblock
- 1 Towel
- Water (and maybe a small snack)? If in an all-included hotel ask for a boxed-lunch which should be provided at no cost.
- Dry clothes
