Would you like to swap the beach for some mountain time with views for a day?

As much fun as surfing or playing with sand at the beach can be it’s always nice to try something different and create some memories along the way.

There are a few different hiking options to enjoy which vary in difficulty, yet hiking Monkey Trail (Cerro del Mono) remains as one the most popular and sought; there’s a reason for this: the views.

Once you reach the summit you’ll enjoy amazing views of Punta de Mita and the bay, and will enjoy plenty of time to take pictures.

Who is this hiking/ trekking tour for?

While hiking Monkey trail does not require you to be a top notch athlete, it’s definitely not for everyone. It’s a 6km (about 4 miles) round trip walk but with 325m (1000 ft) of elevation along single line trails. The last 20 meters do require you to use your hands to keep your balance on some rocks, but everything else is walkable.

Depending on your physical condition it will take around 2-3 hours to complete the round trip hike (including a 15-20 minutes stop at the top).

Trail runners can wrap it up in 50-60 minutes without stopping at the top (let us know if you’d like to run it instead!)

As you can see from the pictures we’ve had kids as young as 4 years old reach the top! However most children will require help from parents at some point.

What to bring

Our hiking tour includes half a liter or water/ gatorade or similar per person. Chances are you’ll want to eat something when you reach the summit, so bringing some fruit or an energy bar will do the trick. You can purchase anything you might want when we arrive at Higuera Blanca, where we’ll leave the car and start walking.

We recommend you bring a cap and some sunblock to protect yourself from the sun. An extra t-shirt will probably come handy as well as we guarantee you will sweat during this hike…and probably A LOT! 🙂
