Puerto Vallarta is a tourist town, hence has plenty of accommodation from which to choose. Most of the beach hotels are for families on holidays with typical all inclusive packages, but there are options as well for those who simply want a place to sleep in, whether cheap or expensive.
However, if surfing is THE reason you are coming here (whether your partner knows it or not) then the hotels below are what you want for one simple reason: they are the closest to the surf, and therefor near or in Punta de Mita . You’ll need transportation for day trips to Puerto Vallarta (all hotels can arrange taxis) and to explore areas outside the hotel.
HOTEL BASALTO
This small and brand new ocean front boutique hotel in Punta Mita has everything you need to make your trip to Puerto Vallarta anything short of ideal. The breezy rooms are very spacious and and well appointed, there’s an excellent indoor restaurant and a rooftop bar with an infinity pool with commanding views of the ocean, and the owner is a surfer too.
You might be able to surf right in front of the hotel is the swell and tide are working, but if not there’s a break within walking distance and you’ll be very close to the best breaks in Mita.
GRAND PALLADIUM RESORT & SPA
The Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa is located in a beachfront paradise haven surrounded by lush tropical local vegetation and 300 meters of fine golden sand bathed by the crystalline waters of the Pacific Ocean. It boasts an exquisite Mexican décor and is ideal for getting away from all worries and relaxing after spending your day on the Bahia de Banderas, playing golf at any of the internationally-known courses in the area or- even better- surfing one of the favorite breaks in all the bay which happens to be right in front of the hotel: Punta Burros. The area’s flora and fauna were taken into careful consideration during the construction of the Resort, and all buildings have been fully integrated into the surrounding vegetation, creating a natural and exotic ambiance.
With fantastic beaches and exuberant vegetation, this destination encourages all (non surfing) visitors to simply lounge under the sun. Close to the exclusive Punta de Mita area, the Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa brings you the best that Nayarit Riviera has to offer: breathtaking landscapes, ample gardens, delicious dining, fun facilities, a relaxing spa and top-notch services. Oh, and did we mention great waves? 😉
We’ve stayed here once and had a great weekend. I had my board with me, but unfortunately Burros of course had to be flat (it picked up 2 days later).

Three More Hotels to Consider in Punta de Mita
A luxurious resort at the tip of Punta de Mita, the St Regis has access to fantastic beaches, posh rooms and great service. There;s no surf right in front of the hotel, but it is close to the most popular breaks (you’ll have to drive or rent a boat).
Casa de Mita is a smaller hotel in Punta Negra. There are a couple of point breaks nearby for advanced surfers but the shore break is somewhat heavy on bigger days, not friendly for swimmers. A good options for those looking for smaller hotels.
The W Punta de Mita is fairly new, located on the beautiful beach of Playa Destiladeras. It’s a great hotel if you’re planning to surf, as there’s a heavy shorebreak right in front and point break Paredon is just to the right. Fantastic for families too.
